How Much Water Should You Drink When Pregnant?

Did you know that when you’re pregnant, your body needs more water than the average person? True Fact. Drinking water actually helps form amniotic fluid, it produces extra blood, builds new tissue and carries nutrients. Not to mention, your water intake will help with constipation, hemorrhoids and fatigue.

HOW MUCH WATER DO YOU REALLY NEED?

It’s recommended that you drink 8-12 glasses of water per day, which equals out to roughly 2.3 liters. You’ll know you’re on the right path when your urine is pale or colorless. All that frequent peeing is rather annoying, but you’ll be happy not to have those unwanted hemorrhoids. Trust me!

HELPFUL TIPS:

The hot summer months can be tough, so be sure to drink up! Water will keep your body temperature cool and reduce swelling.

When you're pregnant, it’s not always easy to consume your daily fluids.  I have some helpful tips to prevent dehydration.

  1. Avoid caffeine, even though it is basically a life-saver.
  2. Drink sparkling water
  3. Add fruits such as lemon, limes, and frozen fruit to your water.
  4. Soups contain a lot of water and count towards fluid intake.
  5. Decaffeinated teas
  6. Skim Milk (believe it or not). If you drink an 8-ounce glass, that's just over 7-ounces of water

WHAT ARE SOME WATER-RICH FOODS TO HELP WITH HYDRATION?

  • Watermelon (92% of water content)
  • Strawberries (91% of water content)
  • Cantaloupe (90% of water content)
  • Oranges (88% of water content)
  • Cucumber (95% of water content)
  • Lettuce (96% of water content)
  • Broths & Soups (92% of water content)
  • Zucchini (94% of water content)
  • Celery (95% of water content)

Drinking water is important and a key component to staying healthy. However, I know how hard it can be to consume a significant amount of water when pregnant. If you’re struggling, know that a variety of water-rich foods will help with your daily intake. As long as you’re eating plenty of water-rich foods and drinking water throughout the day, you shouldn’t have a problem staying hydrated.

I hope this blog has been helpful. I wish you all the best during your motherhood journey.
